Ways to Live a more Sustainable Lifestyle

What does it mean to live a more sustainable life? At MANOLA, we believe that sustainable living involves reducing our environmental impact throughout all activities we carry out. Reducing your environmental footprint can be an intimidating experience that’s for sure, and you might feel ‘too small’ or ‘too insignificant’ to make a difference. However, once you break down sustainable living into small actions, you may soon realise you hold more power than you ever could’ve imagined. At MANOLA, and following climate activist Greta Thunberg’s words, we believe that no one is too small to make a change. Keep reading to find out how you can create yours.

     1. Food waste

In order to lead a more sustainable lifestyle, you must minimize your food waste as much as possible. If you have leftover food, don’t throw it away. Simply put it in a tupperware and save it for your next meal. Want to know the added bonus? It saves you some precious cooking time :)


     2. Eat less meat

Meat production is by far one of the most polluting industries and therefore largest contributors to climate change and biodiversity loss. At MANOLA, we encourage the transition into more sustainable and less environmentally-damaging sources of nourishment such as fruits and vegetables or legumes, which have a similar or arguably an even higher nutritional value. 


     3. Sustainable shopping

Investing in sustainable brands that deliver high quality items that therefore last longer is a must for sustainability. Guilty of being another big polluting industry, fast fashion consumes an insane amount of scarce resources such as water, and the majority of fabrics and chemicals used end up in landfills to rot. At MANOLA, we believe that in 2022, slow fashion most definitely trumps fast fashion and we encourage you to support small & more eco-friendly fashion practices.


     4. Donate unused items / Buy second hand

By donating clothes you no longer use, you prevent landfills from getting bigger and give pieces and fabrics a second chance. This not only allows you to keep your home clutter-free, but you’re also aiding those in need. Thrifting helps you score high-quality pieces at below-average retail prices whilst supporting community projects. Win win, don’t you agree?


     5. Take your own bags when grocery shopping

We still don’t understand how bringing your own bags when grocery shopping isn’t more common. Sustainability spans across grocery shopping as well, and why not place a reminded post-it on your fridge to bring your own bag when you go? You will not only be saving yourself some cash, but will also tremendously benefit the environment simultaneously.


    6. Recycle and reuse

Us millennials have been taught about the importance of reusing and recycling since we were kids. Make sure you’re still following those practices by putting your rubbish in the correct bins and reusing products as many times as possible before classifying them as waste. A few home items that can be reused many times over include: Glass Jars & Containers, Newspapers, Paper & Plastic Bags, Clothes & Towels, Old Furniture and many more! We want you to get creative!


     7. Drive less & use shared transport mechanisms 

Walk or ride a bike where possible. If you don’t own one, rent one for the day. You will be doing the environment and your health a favour! Using public transport is also a great way to efficiently reduce your carbon emissions. 


     8. Energy efficiency 

Energy use can quickly spike your carbon emissions. A few possibilities to reduce energy consumption at home include: switching the lights off, unplugging appliances when you’re not using them, reducing your use of heating / cooling mechanisms and hang-drying your clothes instead.
